Cenote diving from Playa del Carmen

Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes under the Yucatán jungle, linked to some of the largest underwater cave systems in the world. Diving them means crystal-clear water, limestone formations, haloclines and beams of light. From Playa del Carmen, a cenote day is two dives in two cenotes, about five hours with transport.

Cavern or deep: which cenote for your level

Cavern dives stay within reach of daylight, between 6 and 12 metres, and are open to Open Water divers. Deep cenotes such as Angelita or El Pit go down to 30 metres, through a halocline and a hydrogen sulphide cloud, and need the Advanced certification and some experience. Hell Bells, near Puerto Morelos, reaches 45 metres.

What you will see

Fresh water with exceptional visibility, stalactites and stalagmites, haloclines where fresh and salt water meet, roots hanging from the jungle above, and light coming through the openings. It is calm and quiet, a different world from the reef.

Questions

Can I dive a cenote without a certification?

No. Cenote dives need at least the Open Water certification. Our Learn to dive package gets you certified first, then takes you to the cenotes.

Which cenote is best for a first cenote dive?

Dos Ojos, Chac Mool or Casa Cenote: shallow, bright, with daylight in sight. Your guide chooses with you depending on your experience and the day's conditions.

How cold is the water?

Cenote water is fresh and stays cooler than the sea all year. A full wetsuit is recommended; it is part of the equipment included in our packages.
